The most common reasons why children dehydrate are:

  • Fever is the most common reason why babies and toddlers dehydrate
  • Overheating is the second most common cause of dehydration in babies and toddlers because of sweating excessively in hot environments with too many layers of clothing on.
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea is the main cause of dehydration in toddlers and children.
  • Rejecting drinks and breastfeeding is a common cause of dehydration in children of all ages because of factors such as teething, thrush, sore throat, or a cold.
